Heralds Of The Storm - Some Early WIP Pics

I've really struggled to get anything done for these lately as I had been working evenings and with the kids evenings (once they're all settled into bed) are then only time I ever get to actually build or paint my minis generally. Luckily I've gotten on to the day shift at work now so I have my evenings back which means I have my hobby back!

Been playing in a fantasy campaign at my gaming club which starts out with 500pts armies and even that's a woeful unpainted mass of half-built proxy miniatures so I'm eager to try and get some of these guys done. I also really want to paint my first character to try and enter the COTEC painting competition but I'm going to be tight for time on that now I think so will have to see how it goes!

Some WIP Chaos warriors with halberds, got another 16 of these to build for this unit yet!

The character I'm working on - Tarkal Khagan - I really love the Harry The Hammer miniature and I was glad to get my hands on another one after converting him and using bits of him to make my BSB for the Devotees of Elazar way back when! Itching to try out the colour scheme for this army on him (or any mini for that matter!) so will hopefully get him started in the next couple of nights!

In the background you'll spot a load of great weapon wielding marauders. They're all mostly with the exception of the all need heads on their weapons as they're currently just running around with big sticks! Then with a bit of tidying up and some GS they'll be ready to paint!

Hopefully there'll not be anywhere near as long between updates this time and I'll have some more to show off soon!

Heralds Of The Storm - Getting Started

First off, it's shocking that there's not been an update on The Glorious Works since June! A lot has happened in that time with a new baby and a new job so I'm only just now starting to get my hobby time back!
They say that everything goes around in a circle and so it seems as here I am starting a new Warriors of Chaos army. This one actually kind of follows on as the background ties in with the old Devotees of Elazar, and in particular with the Storm God narrative campaign that I wrote...
So first off some new fluff!

*

Rumpolt Staudinger panicked as he tripped over a rock underfoot. At one time he’d been weary of his drawn out existence but now suddenly faced with his potential mortality he found himself desperate to survive. The daemon Elazar had used him as a pawn and as a chronicler of all of the being’s nefarious deeds and to aid him in this task he’d extended and twisted the old man’s life out for a great many generations more than he should ever have seen. And now in hindsight he realised it had all been destined to lead to that one specific point in time. Elazar had sent Rumpolt into the north to a massive cleft in the earth at the foot of which The Storm God slumbered. An ancient Shaggoth, kin to those other names dreaded of their kind - Krakanrok The Black and Kholek Suneater. Aarakturious Stormfather had spent centuries in hibernation, awaiting the great storm that would summon him to war once more.
A being aflame with ambition Elazar The Glorified sought to summon the very storm that would awaken Aarakturious. Alongside a coven of sorcerers sworn to his service they channelled vast energies to birth vast black clouds that crackled with the pent up fury of the storm. The summoning destroyed the minds of the sorcerers and the chaos energies warped their forms into hideous mutated spawn but for a Daemon Prince of Elazar’s standing the energies were easy to bear with very little strain.
The terrible storm that followed was a thing of nightmares. Thunderclaps sounded and the world shook at their roars as if the sky was splintering overhead under such tremendous force. Hail and lightning lashed the land amidst such chaos the Storm God stirred. The Daemon Prince Elazar demanded fealty of the ancient Shaggoth and Aarakturious responded with a deafening roar that made the thunder overhead seem tame. The Shaggoth climbed from the cleft in which he’d slumbered to the cliff tops above. Again the Daemon Prince demanded the fealty of the Storm God and was in turn swatted aside with contemptuous ease. The tribes that surrounded the lands where the Storm God slumbered had built a temple to the sleeping behemoth and the chaos gods that he served and to this temple Aarakturious strode bathing in the lightning that now struck repeatedly at his titanic form.
His pride now a stinging wound in his daemonic heart, Elazar The Glorified soared to the temple built to honour Aarakturious and the ground shook as the two beings duelled amidst the great pillars risen by the tribes in tribute to their infernal patrons. The Chaos Gods watched the contest, the storm had drawn their attention but the combat that raged between Elazar and Aarakturious now held their gaze.
In Aarakturious Tzeentch saw the changes that would be wrought upon the world by his armies and he spied all the paths of fate leading to and from this moment plotting their course. Slaanesh bathed in the ancient pride of the Shaggoth and could already sense the great torrents of fear that would drown his foes. Nurgle sensed the despair in mortal hearts at the Storm God’s reawakening and knew that in their wake his armies would leave fields of carrion to be tended by flocks of crows and swarms of flies, each host to plagues and diseases beyond counting. Khorne could feel the endless rage of the storm, the infinite hatred of the dread Shaggoth and knew that towers of skulls would be heaped at the foot of his great brass throne in offering.
In that moment Aarakturious carried the blessing of each of the Ruinous Powers and Elazar felt only the scorn of his own beloved patron. With a ferocious strike Aarakturious destroyed the Daemon Prince’s physical form banishing him back to the realm of chaos. The storm overhead swelled with power as the chaos gods fed its power to herald the awakening of their new champion.
The Devotees of Elazar had borne witness as events unfolded before them, helpless to intercede as their beloved leader was destroyed. With a roar Aarakturious summoned his own followers to war and those tribes that had journeyed to witness the awakening of the Storm God descended upon the Devotees. But, for all the ferocity of the Astragar, Kavakh and Mulghar men it was the egos of the champions of the Devotees of Elazar that spelled their doom. Each keen to ascend in Elazar’s place they killed their own just as readily as the Storm God’s followers sought to slay them. Some such as Harkaitz made their stand and were cut down by the tide of tribesmen whilst others like Endika Fleshtearer fled to escape their doom.
Amidst the chaos Rumpolt Staudinger had thought he’d made good his escape until he glanced back and spotted the half-dozen riders dogging his steps. In an instant the fight was gone from him, he felt the years of his extraordinarily long life catching up with him all at once. Resigned to his fate he hobbled over to a rocky outcrop and sat himself down.
The riders sensed an end to their sport so quickly covered the ground between themselves and the old man. All six of them were Mulghar men. They were each frightful in their own way bearing slight mutations that marked them as servants of the dark gods but it was the man that rode at their head that scared Rumpolt. He wore a helm and armour on is right arm that seemed alive with the electricity of the storm that still raged overhead. Arcs of lightning played over its surface with an audible crackle but the man himself seemed not only unharmed but unfazed by them. On his chest a brand of a lightning bolt had been burnt into the skin, marking him as a servant of the ascendant Storm God. The man leapt down from his mount, a beast clearly touched by the warping energies of chaos, and then hoisted Rumpolt to his feet. He said something in his own tongue that Rumpolt didn’t understand and within seconds the other five men had leapt down from their steeds and began to bind spears together with twine. The man stood watching Rumpolt as the men in his thrall set busily to whatever task he had set them. His face was hidden behind his helm which he’d topped with the skull of some beast. Even without being able to see the man’s face though Rumpolt could feel the barely contained rage which seemed to charge the air around him, the fury of the storm above them seemed to echo in the heart of that man and Rumpolt felt only dread as he regarded him.
When the Mulghars had finished they had bound together dozens of spears in the image of the eight pointed star of chaos. Another shout from their leader saw the men grab Rumpolt and drag him struggling to the chaos star and bind him to it. Rumpolt alternated between howling in fear and pleading with the but if they understood his words the made no outward show of it. With two thick ropes they raised the start upright and into a hole they’d dug into the ground to plant it.
“The storm will decide your fate,” the armoured man said his voice iron as it sounded from behind his helm.
As the men mounted their horses and continued southwards riding ahead of the storm their leader glanced back over his shoulder and watched the lightning raking the ground around the chaos start they’d erected and then saw it catch light as another bolt struck it and it burst into flames, a fiery sigil of chaos against the black clouds that stretched back on the horizon. He thought he heard the old man’s agonised screams for a moment but the thunder drowned out the sound like cruel rumbling laughter.

*

This is going to be an Undivided Chaos force. The followers of the Storm God worship the four ruinous powers as well as the Storm God as the gods' chosen champion.

I was inspired by The Temple of Skulls shown in White Dwarf 381. My wargames club has just bought one so I painted it similarly so that there's now some themed terrain where I play all my games! Just need to build and paint the army now!

I've also put together some mock-ups of for my chaos ogres. I saw a great Ogre Kingdoms army using the Minotaurs somewhere on blogger. Their owner had sculpted pants etc to make them Ogre bulls but I figure the chaotic feral feel of the Minotaurs is perfect as is for some very raw looking Chaos Ogres.

The Glories Of Others - Monsterzonk's Nurgle Troll

I wanted to show Monsterzonk's Nurgle Troll that he made for his Warriors of Chaos army. I think it's a disturbing and awesome mini and really captures the feel of the army!
Monsterzonk has two great threads on Warseer associated with this army. The project is called "A Tale of Plague and Pestilence" and is split over two threads, one for the miniatures and one for the fluff.

A Tale of Plague and Pestilence - Army Building Thread
A Tale of Plague and Pestilence - The Story Thread

Here are some pictures of the Nurgle Troll

I also want to include a WIP picture just so you can see how much green stuff work has gone into this unique mini.

I personally can't wait to see a complete unit of these! Please go and see Monsterzonk's threads linked above for the rest of this army. There are some amazing miniatures that he'd built and painted and its an army with a really great theme!

The Devotees of Elazar - Warriors of Chaos On Ebay

With a heavy heart I'm selling the Devotees of Elazar. Ebay auctions can be found here with some more still to come.

I'll be working on a different fantasy army once I'm finished with the Gorewing army for 40k. Thank you to everyone who's taken the time to comment them, hopefully you'll like the next army...

Zorion The Resplendent on Chaos Dragon Early Mock-up

My Warriors of Chaos haven't been forgotten I'd just been looking for something a bit different to get my teeth stuck into with them. So here's a very early mock-up of what I'm going for.

Obviously, the dragon is still in need of wings. They'll be added on once I get my hands on them.
I've done a fair bit of work to the Carnosaur to get it into the pose I want and to make it a bit more dragon like. Firstly, I bent the tail of the model to a completely different angle, this was for the most part purely about the balance of the piece. Obviously balancing that much metal in the air leads to an element of inbalance so stretching the tail out allowed me to offset that a great deal. The tail was extremely hard work to shift so I kept boiling it and bending it until I got roughly the shape I wanted. I also bent the Carnosaurs left out to make the pose look more realistic as it climbs the rock ready to soar back into the sky in search of prey.

That picture shows the difference in the Carnosaurs pose now. As you can see I've extended the neck to make it longer bodied and slightly more serpentine in shape. The head on the Carnosaur is actually from another Carnosaur but cut further down so that also helped to extend the neck so far. The milliput there at the minute is just to space, I'll be adding greenstuff on top to detail scales etc.

Zorion the Sorcerer Lord rider is still very early in his construction too. For the most part it's the mounted Slaanesh Lord mini but the helmet is from a Dark Elf but with the cone filed down to make a flat top more like an Arthurian Knight style helm. I might add some decoration to the top yet and I'll be sculpting a gem to cover the hole in the helm. The Slaaneshi staff top is the icon from the Daemonettes sprues.
The rock on the base is made from air drying clay for the most part and some milliput under the left foot. Again, there'll be green stuff etc to tidy this up and detail it but for now I'm just getting the underlying shapes down. Imagine wings on him though and you'll have a very good idea where I'm trying to go with this.

WIP Chaos Warriors w/ Additional Hand Weapons

Here's a pic of the current state of the Warriors now they're back on their bases. Been a really slow moving process with these, too many distractions!

Got quite a bit to do still. This is just the darkest metallic colour on the gold currently, got to highlight it up to the normal colour still. Once all the painting is done I'll be adding another snowfall to the bases! More updates soon!

Chaos Warriors - Movement Tray

Not a real update but I am still working on these! Movement Tray and bases WIP pic!

Saturday, 20 February 2010

Quick Update

Forgot I hadn't posted these pics of the Warriors here yet. Haven't gotten any more done since but hope to get some more painting done today. One more highlight and I'll be moving on to the gold.

As I said I haven't done much painting in the last few days. Most of my painting time occurs when my daughter decides that godforsaken o'clock is the ideal time to wake me up so she can go downstairs and watch Peppa Pig or Teletubbies. Miraculously she's been sleeping through the last few nights so I've not painted anything. Anyway, with the half term, doing papier mache with my son and my nephew was the perfect excuse for me to able to make a start on something I've been wanting to try as well.

Yes, this certainly does continue the trend of rather random pictures of god only knows what!
It's going to be my scenery piece to represent the Herdstone Shard magic item in the Beastmen army. Whilst I like the idea of the item, the idea of burying a rock in the ground doesn't seem half as good as burying a tainted acorn or some such and a chaotic tree sprouting like something out of Jack and the Beanstalk. It'll be based on a cd.
The problem with this whole project though, is I'll probably never use the magic item. My Beastmen are going to be a very mobile army and having to bunker shamans in my deployment zone just seems like suicide.
Anyhow, this is the framework of said tree.

Chaos Warriors w/ Additional Hand Weapons

Not much of a post but I've spent lots more time on the Warriors but haven't gotten very far with them. Seemed to take forever to black their cloaks back so I could start on them. Here's a picture of one now that I've put the first highlight on. Going to blend the darker purple with the highlighted purple a bit more then I'm going to add one more extreme highlight and then I think I'll be leaving the cloaks.

What do you think so far?

Chaos Warriors & Lord Kemen's Tomb

I've made a start on a unit of Chaos Warriors. Not much to look at yet but the picture proves that I am doing something at least!

I decided that since Argider is almost exactly the same to paint as the Warriors I might as well do him at the same time and then when I had one slot spare on the movement tray I figured I'd put Ximun on there as the purple on the Warriors' cloaks will be getting used on his robes. This means two of my Mordheim warband get painted at the same time and seeing as the rest will get painted when I get to the Marauder unit it's all good!

Also, might seem random for now...

From such humble beginnings shall rise Lord Kemen's Tomb! More on this later!

Vilitch The Curseling

I've started working on a Vilitch The Curseling mini. Obviously this isn't for my mono-slaanesh army but is just me dabbling with doing something different and most likely he will end up on ebay when finished!

Here's a reference picture of Vilitch.

Image property of Gamesworkshop

So I've made a quick mock up of Thomin (Vilitch's bigger, stronger brother who he is now conjoined with).

I've got lots and lots and lots to do with him but thought I'd start logging my work on him from this stage on! I'll be using the head from this Chaos Sorcerer as Vilitch's and then a lot of the rest will be sculpted by myself.

The Storm God, Scenery, Foe-render and beginnings of an Elazar conversion!

Been a little bit since my last update but I have been very busy. Here are some pics of what I've managed in between.

I finished the Fortified Manor House I had been painting. Sadly I didn't manage to get any good pics of it before returning it to my gaming club but I did get the following (not particularly great) two.

I finished the green stuff work on the Foe-render last night. Will start painting him tonight. Thoughts and feedback appreciated as ever

I've just spotted the mould line on the beard so that's gone! I haven't decided quite what to do with his base yet so I'm hoping inspiration will strike whilst I'm painting him!

I've also been working on a few other conversions. I started on a rough idea for Elazar himself.

The head is going though. I've tried a couple of different things to make the deceiver's head less ugly but it just looks ridiculous. Back to the drawing board on that.
I'm still not entirely convinced by it all though. Seemed like a good idea at the time but I'm just not feeling it with this one at the minute. Maybe when I get the head right I'll be happier with it...
The rest of the Pegasus Knight kit has given me some interesting ideas for other minis though!

I also have some more fluff from the players in The Storm God campaign.
First up Brian with some background for his Empire army:

*

The door to the Gunners Daughter Tavern swung open, the sudden fresh air swirling the smoke from a dozen pipes and the moist heat from the logs burning in the grate. Honveii, Warrior Priest of Sigmar glanced over at the figure that entered "It looks like things did not go well at the meeting of the Engineers Council. too bad for Sigmar and the Empire" he said quietly to his companion, who glanced up at the priests words and seeing the figure at the doorway, raised his hand and his voice "Over here, we saved you a seat by the fire!" the cloaked figure at the door swung it closed behind him with no little force as if to seal the tavern against whatever vexed him. As the figure slung himself into the offered chair, the priest pushed a flagon of the fiery Nuln spirits across the table. "This will warm you and if, as I surmise, things have not gone well, ease some of the anger you feel."
"No things did not go well with the Engineers Council, they refused to fund my research into weapons development! They say the monies are better spent on tried and trusted weapons....Tried and trusted, some of our designs are hundreds of years old...." his voice trailed off as he drank from his tankard "I lost my temper" he admitted "I stated that I, Cerdic the Black, would find the monies elsewhere if they were too Miserly, Pinch-pocketed, Hidebound and Blind to see that my ideas would be of service to the Empire." Cerdic sighed and rested is head on his hands.....
"Wish I could help you, as you have often helped me, but a Captain of the Empire, even one who's father is a count, has too small a purse for weapons research!" said Karel, the third member of the group, "but when he set me up with the training and appointment as a Kaptain of Knights he told me it was sink or swim time, not that I blame him, he did well by me as one born the wrong side of the blanket. And when Last he wrote he said he has heard glowing reports of my growing skill and was proud of me."
the Priest raised his eyes to the ceiling and spoke quietly as if musing to himself "Word has come down to my chapter house from our brethren in the north, It would seem that Chaos is stirring and the old stories of the crown of Arnaldo are doing the rounds again. It is said that crown was made from the purest gold and decorated with the most prized gems and also that it was magical in nature. " the priest paused and looked at his two companions " I have been placed with a unit of spearmen and their detachments, we are to move to the border ready for deployment in the coming campaign, If say we were to encounter an engineer going our way we would be surprised if he did not travel with us for safety, and if we were to have an escort of knights under a proved Kaptain in war, we would, quite naturally place ourselves under his command, and war, being full of the unexpected......" He glanced at his two now cheerful companions
"I think the engineer would have a Hellblaster in tow, and escort of pistoleer's, I know a sargeant that owes me several large favours" grinned Cerdic
"my my" murmured Karel urbanely "I always wanted to be a General."
"so we are agreed then" said the priest and he raised his voice and tankard " For Sigmar and the Empire!" Two tankards and two voices joined his "FOR SIGMAR AND THE EMPIRE!".

*

Then Mark with background for his Warriors of Chaos:

*

Lady Herner looked out of the window for the hundreth time. The night was moonless and lit by distant lightning. A bad omen in these cursed lands. Living at the edge of the empire the forces of magic and evil were stronger than that of the southern lands.
She had been unable to sleep and had come back downstairs to tend the fire, from the window see could see no other light in the village, they were blistfully asleep, something that had alauded her for the last two nights. It was almost as if she could feel something approaching. Those stories in the Tavern hadnt helped. Some begger kept going on about maruaders and some Chaos Crown buried in the woods. She had never put pay in these cheap fireplace stories much heed but they amused the locals well enough. However as he looked out the window she couldnt help but feel cold, and aggitated.

Another flash of lightning, for a split second the world turned an icy blue. There in the wood line, a shape, or was it? She could of sworn she saw a knight. She strained her eyes but nothing. No alarms from the watchtower all must be well. She looked up at the watchtower the small lantern still burned. Another flash and she lept back. In the ligntning she had seen the tower lit up, two bodies hung from its side, a horrible rune written on the side of it. She screamed and dove under the table.

Her family above her rose shoting in the dark, calling her name, she cared not for their concern all she could her was the sound of rusting armour from outside her front door.

*

The campaign will be starting 21st March so I have until then to get everything sorted. Will be a challenge as I've given myself quite a bit to do. Will post more soon!

Quick WIP Shots

I did a mock up for one of the Ungors in my Beastmen army. Still needs tidying up etc but wanted to see how the mini would look built.

Going to greenstuff some fur onto the upper arms etc to make the arm seem more like its meant to be there but it seems to be a quick and easy solution to the problem of arming the Ungors with short bows! Ignore the base size, by all accounts that's going to switch to 20mm so he isn't stuck down yet!

Also done a tiny bit more work on Aaracturious The Storm God...

I've been working on another mini as well but he's refusing to photograph well so you'll have to wait and see him at another point!

The Storm God - The Rules So Far

'The Storm God' is a small narrative campaign. It's g 3 games in length. The campaign is for 4 players. The 3 games will be different scenarios and will be different from the standard Pitched Battle way of playing Warhammer.
The armies are heading north into the chaos wastes to hunt down and slay the legendary Shaggoth Aaracturious and to claim King Arnaldo's crown. Their motives may be for their own wealth, glory or power or maybe they're pure of heart and seek to do these things only to rid the world of a great evil and to regain a relic of the past.

Rules

Two big rules:
This is a story based campaign. That means words such as 'balance' and 'win' are now dirty words. The scenarios will hopefully help sort things out where there are problems but ultimately the main idea here is to have fun.

The campaign is character based and driven. The characters that people use will have to have their own name. (This also means no special characters of any sort). The name doesn't have to be anything fancy but this campaign is about these (anti) heroic personalities.

Army Rules:
Each player pics a 1000pt army with the following exceptions:
Only 250pts can be spent on characters.
Only 750 pts can be spent on the rest of the army. 2+ Core, 0-3 Special, 0-1 Rare.
No magic items are allowed. No runic items are allowed. Nothing that is bought from your magic items points allowance normally is allowed e.g. Virtues, Spites, Scavenge Pile etc.
No Daemonic Gifts, Gifts of Khaine, Vampiric Powers, Gifts of Chaos etc.
No Special characters
Marks of Chaos, Vows, Kindreds etc. are allowed.
Mounts are allowed. If they count as an additional Hero choice etc. then this rule still applies and the cost of the mount comes from the 250pt maximum allowance on characters. Please remember mounted characters require an alternate on foot model for one of the scenarios.

Campagin Rules:
(more to come on these)

I'm not going to insist on painted minis. However, I would love it if everyone could make the effort to have their characters painted at least. It's not essential though so don't feel that you have to...
Characters will gain experience as the campaign progresses.

I've already posted some fluff but this can be found following the links below if you missed it...

The Storm God - Aaracturious

In between painting I've also been working on my other beast...

I was feeling daring with him! I filed down most of the original Shaggoth face and then cut the Defiler face to a more suitable shape. Sculpted the hair to make the transition from the helmet to the rest of the mini seem less drastic. What do you think? I'm far from a scholar of the greenstuff arts but does it look passable so far?
Still got lots to do on him yet!

The Storm God

Rumpolt Staudinger is a man of extraordinary long life. He was already in the winter of his life when his path crossed with that of a mortal follower of the chaos gods. That man was known by the name Elazar The Glorified. The Daemon Prince was still a mortal man when he led a small warband to the Hospice for the Insane at Sensfeld. What had drawn him from the north to that place nobody will ever know. He and his followers stormed the Hospice and took great delight in slaughtering the many patients there. The good Sisters of Shallya who ran the hospice were bound in chains and led into the courtyard of the abbey that had become the Hospice. One patient alone was spared from the slaughter. Rumpolt Staudinger. Elazar marched the elderly man into the courtyard and let him witness the heinous act that followed. The Sisters of Shallya were crucified, foul runes daubed on their flesh, their souls offered as gifts to Slaanesh. It was that unholy act that earnt Elazar the ultimate favour of the Serpent God. Rumpolt Staudinger witnessed Elazar's ascension into immortality. Elazar has kept Rumpolt alive through countless lives of men since then. The man is drawn to the great and terrible acts carried out by the Daemon and his followers, cursed to witness them all. To the Cult of Elazar that has sprung up in the wake of his tales he is a prophet, a mouthpiece of their idol.
To Elazar, Rumpolt is a toy, an oddity, a pet. Elazar protects and prolongs the life of the wretched old man but only so that he can have the pleasure of tormenting him, himself. Forcing him to witness and record the fell deeds done in his name. But that doesn't mean Rumpolt isn't important to Elazar. The daemon is the embodiement of the selfish vanity and ambition in man. Rumpolt catalogues the daemon's glories and in his maddened state shares them with the world. There are some who listen and find themselves drawn to the worship of the daemon and Elazar's power grows within the Realm of Chaos. His own mad ambitions slowly being realised...

*

Rumpolt journeyed north. He knew his steps would be dogged by the Witch Hunters but he knew that there was nothing they could do to him that would match the eternity of torment he’d be subjected to if he failed his daemon master. Along the journey there were those that helped him, they offered food and shelter from his pursuers. He preached his warning to any who passed him but they though him mad for the most part. Mad he might possibly be, but he knew the truth. Soon the forest roads gave way to open plains. Fevered dreams haunted Rumpolt’s nights so he gave up trying to sleep and continued walking in the darkness. He knew he had to bear witness to the Storm God’s reawakening. It was both his privilege and his curse.
As he journeyed ever northwards the landscape became barren and featureless. He knew he drew near to the wastes. To an observer he might have looked like a lost old man but despite there being no landmarks and having never seen his path before, Rumpolt knew exactly how to get to where he needed to be. His journey was halted though. In the distance he heard a shout go up, and then others followed suit. They’d finally caught up with him. He was too old and weak to put up any fight now. He tightened his grip on the stick he walked with. He whispered a plea to the daemon and stood silently, ready to face the wrath of his pursuers…

*

That brings the fluff up to the point the where the first scenario will start. Rumpolt alone, amongst mortals at least, knows the path through the wastes to where the Storm God slumbers. Obviously, this makes him exceptionally valuable (alive!) to anybody who seeks Aaracturious and Arnaldo's fabled crown. So at the point we'll kick off the armies have spotted his silhouette in the distance as dark clouds start to fill the sky.

The Storm God - A Mini Narrative Campaign

Most enlightened Sir,

I write with grave and worrying news. The heretic Rumpolt Staudinger has somehow escaped his imprisonment. His trial was still ongoing and upon a routine inspection his jailors found his cell to be empty and the only evidence that it had ever been occupied was this scrawled warning on the wall.

‘A storm approaches. The heavens will be ripped asunder and the thunderous racket will awaken the slumbering Storm God. Dread Sharunock, Aarakturious. Glorious Elazar rouses his immortal servant for the war to come. Fear the storm!’

The man's insane rambling never seem to cease... I have dispatched riders as news reached me today that he has been sighted journeying north, sharing his mad prophecy with all who will listen. I pray that Sigmar will guide my men in recapturing the so-called Prophet of Elazar! Then I shall turn my attention to the distressing question of how a man as old and weak as Staudinger was able to escape...

Yours,
Aldebrandt Veit
Witch Hunter Captain

*

Krakanrok The Black made a bargain with the Chaos Gods to buy his race's immortality, in exchange they offered their eternal servitude to their Gods' armies. Aarakturious, kin of Krakanrok and his children was present that fell day and played his own part in the outcome. Aarakturious has long since returned to his slumber, rousing occassionally after the most destructive of storms, ready to make war at the dark gods' calling.
The name of Aarakturious appears in the histories of the old world on numerous occasions over the centuries. The most well-known mention though is in the legend of King Arnaldo…
Arnaldo was a Tilean who like so many sought a new life in the Border Princes. Of relatively high birth and upbringing he quickly rose to prominence in the colonies there. In the aftermath of a particularly brutal raid by Norscan pirates Arnaldo was made King of the budding port city of Gaderloc, on the Black Gulf. Whilst the legends all differ on its source, they all agree that the crown set upon his head was made from the purest gold and decorated with the most prized gems and also that it was magical in nature. Arnaldo went from a gifted young thinking man to a wise and powerful king. Indeed when the Norscan Hamund Gorebeard returned the next spring to raid the port Arnaldo met him in combat and bested him. Soon after, Arnaldo led an expedition north into the wastes. The stories say he wanted to subject the Norscans to their own devilry but the truth is unknown now. Whilst in the bitter lands of the north Arnaldo and his force had the misfortune of encountering the ancient Shaggoth, Aarakturious. Arnaldo was slain by the titanic beast and most of his army too. Those that returned told tales of the crown and the beast that had slain its wearer. They told of how the Shaggoth had taken the crown and wore it on his belt as a trophy.

Spies and informants whisper of Rumpolt's insane prophecies. Most write his words off as madness. But amongst some, the fires of ambition are stoked. The legend of King Arnaldo speaks of the value of his crown. Slaying the beast Aaracturious would be a deed to match the greatest heroes of legend. The wealth and power such things could bring a man are too hard to ignore...

This is the intro fluff for the narrative campaign I'm running in the new year at my gaming club. More on this soon...

Updated Fluff & WIP Chariot

Well there's not a massive update today. I have lots of painting to do but I thought I'd show a quick pic of something I put together the other day.

Now you may recognise that this is my long standing WIP chariot given a new lease of WIP life! I decided that with Luken The Sixth Born already planned in my head I wanted to differentiate the unit chariots from the character chariots a bit more and with the fluff I've already written the Marauder Chariot fits so much better!
For xmas there's supposed to be a chariot race at my gaming group so I'm trying to decide whether to enter this one or to slightly fast track getting Luken's chariot built. Decisions, decisions.
I've made a slight update to the first Devotees post on this blog now. Mostly it's just to tidy things up but I've also put some new fluff there. I'll post it here as well so people get to see it without having to hunt all over the blog for it!

“Rejoice,” he told me, “for I am Elazar.” For his fell deed Slaanesh gave the gift of immortality. He was elevated to Daemonhood and I stood in awe for I had witnessed the birth of the death of man. He rose into the sky on feathered wings, radiant, more glorious than the sun, it’s light paling in the Daemon’s aura. His harmonious voice filled the skies as he spoke to me then. My heartbeat froze, desperate not to besmirch the wondrous sound with its crude thudding.
“I am temptation, I am vanity. I am the voice that says yes when all other say no. I am the dark ambition that broods at the core of every man. I am your salvation and I am your doom. Love me or fear me, it matters not, you will be my slave.”

The mad writings of Rumpolt Staudinger who impossibly claims to have been present at the massacre at the Hospice for the Insane at Sensfeld. Staudinger’s insanity is matched only by his heresy. May this document provide further proof against him in his ongoing trial and may Sigmar’s righteous fires free him from his ravings!

Elazar The Glorified is a Daemon Prince of Slaanesh. Such is his standing in the eyes of Slaanesh and indeed his arrogance that he is worshipped by many as a god in his own right. In the far north the Diatchi worship him in part as a proxy for Slaanesh but in part as a separate deity. The Diatchi are a collection of tribes of predominantly Kurgan stock, the tribes exist in a state of war with eachother but at times a High Zar is able to bring the lower Zar's of the tribes into line and lead them to war all the while the Daemon Prince watches over his Glorious Host...
The followers of Elazar are not confined to just the northern tribes. In the darkest depths of the forests of the Old World an ascending Beastlord is starting to gather the rival herds in the name of the Daemon.
And worse still in the heart of the Empire's cities the Cult of Elazar continues to attract more followers.

There's a lot more to come on this and a lot more detail to go into for a lot of things mentioned above so take note!

I was going to post a battle report for the huge 7000pt vs. Skaven battle. However, we only got to my opponents turn 3 before we had to start packing up. It was advantage Skaven at the time but I hadn't had my 3rd turn yet and I had a few rather juicy charges lined up including Harkaitz and a unit of Knights had managed to close in on a stranded Thanquol and then would have been able to turn into the flank of the Skaven army We're going to redo the battle when we have less of a restriction on time and then I'll be sure to post a battle report worthy of a 7000pt game!
